There it is. Your second argument is the correct rebuttal to the OP.
I can pay more taxes, sure, but it won't do any of the good that I support. It's a drop in the ocean. The higher tax POLICY that people advocate is a group policy — it accomplishes something only if applied to large groups.
So there's nothing hypocritical about not wanting to waste money by paying extra taxes but at the same time thinking it would be a good idea for large groups of americans to pay higher taxes.
