I guess what I'm really wanting to know is, is there a way to get a sense, even
if not perfect, of my "baseline" calorie burn in a normal day? Then I can add to that based on exercise, and compare it to what I eat.

I think a Dexa scan, or a bod pod will give you that info. No idea how accurate.

You got it. The bmr is what you theoretically burn if you don't get out of bed in a day.
