...developing and preparing to step up if needed. I think consistency with that latter part has sort of been missing for quite a long time at BYU at least where it comes to bridging from one QB to the next. Things went smoothly from Beck to Hall and we were very fortunate that neither guy missed much time (if any) due to injury.
Post Max Hall things didn’t go smoothly with our QB development and it contributed to some seasons where we underperformed on the field as a team. 2012 was a glaring example of this lack of developed depth at the position. We had a top 3 defense that season, maybe the best in school history and by all rights should’ve had a special season and instead saw it mired in mediocrity with an 8-5 finish and embarrassing losses because coaches refused to make a switch at QB when the starter was hurting the team.
Kalani and staff have been intentional in trying to both get quality depth and develop it. This past season was a prime example of this, we had a senior QB who was a holdover from the previous coaching staff that provided a bridge to the freshman future star. Credit to coaches for having the courage to make that switch during the season.
The future looks bright
