I know the city well. Lived there 3 months on my mission.
I also went to Brugge this past summer with my wife.

If this is your only time in Belgium, you definitely need to splurge and eat the national food of Belgium: mussels! There are a couple of restaurants in Brugge that serve them.

In terms of activities, there is an easy walking tour that you can find online. The walking tour gives you the best views of all of the architecture and canals. Most people also take one of the boat tours. They cram you in the boats like sardines, tell terrible jokes and charge you too much for the boat tours, but it is still probably worth it because you do get some nice views.

Someone mentioned climbing the tower on the main plain. Excellent idea and I recommend it as well. Yes, you will be tired once you reach the top, but it is an amazing view. There are two stands to buy frieten (fries) at the base of the tower. If you buy some, make sure to get them with andalouse sauce (just trust me on this one).

You can definitely walk from the train station all the way to the main square, but it is probably a good mile+ walk. Make sure to walk along the Minnewater to get to the downtown--don't walk along the regular streets. The walk along the Minnewater starts a bit to the right outside the train station. Do not follow most people and walk to the left.

If you like museums, the best museum is the Groeninge museum, as it contains the best collection of art. There are a number of other smaller museums, including the Memling Museum.

When you take the walking tour, you will see tons of chocolate stores. I recommend the Leonidas chocolates. They may be a bit more expensive, but they are real Belgian chocolates. If you just want to buy regular Belgian chocolate in a grocery store, Cote de Ore is the brand to buy, as it is also truly Belgian and not imported to the U.S. except on a limited basis.

Finally, I recommend just sitting on the main plain in a cafe and enjoy a beverage and the views! If you are with a significant other and have money to burn, take one of the horse carriage rides as well.

Definitely one of the prettiest cities in the world!!
