Fast is a relative thing...
So if you’re comparing him to most of the population, or even most HS football players in Utah, then he is pretty fast. But if you’re comparing him to D1 level players at his position then he isn’t nearly as fast. So that was the knock on him, lack of D1 FBS level receiver speed.

Which of course doesn’t mean he can’t or won’t be a good player, just that like I mentioned above he lacks, or wasn’t quite there, in that measurable. I know that he has an actual scholarship offer to SUU and I think a couple of other Big Sky schools, but he obviously believes he can compete at BYU and is willing to pay his own way to do it.

My sincere hope is that if he does become an actual contributing player that they then give him a scholarship because contributing players deserve to be paid for being contributors. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen that way often enough even if a kid does become an actual player. Once they sign and are on the team they are subject to all of the same transfer rules as scholarship players so schools can keep them without paying them because if they do transfer they lose eligibility.

I don’t know that there will ever be a transfer rule that allows scholarship players to transfer without losing a year of eligibility but I think walk ons should be able to do it. It would force schools to give scholarships to their walk ons that deserve them.
