Edit: I should say I don’t agree completely. The front-loaded schedule is a huge hurdle, and many of the P5 losses are on the road.
However, look at SOS from 2011 on. It makes the last three seasons look awfully bad compared to the Bronco independence era.
Sure there have been some complete spankings against P5 teams like LSU, Michigan, UW, etc., but BYU should not lose to mediocre programs like Missouri and 2018 California, just to name a couple.
My opinion is that it’s a combination of things. Such as letting our OL and DL quality deteriorate, bad luck with the QB position, having had a really marginal coaching staff, and last but not least, not instilling a culture of discipline and work within the team.
Given the SOS in 2017 and 2018, I don’t know how you can blame it solely on the indy schedule.
On a positive note, it seems like Sitake is slowly learning how to be a more effective head coach. The new offensive staff was a huge upgrade and has probably had a significant effect on the entire team culture. OL in particular is greatly improved and should be successively better in the next few years.
Also, there’s that Wilson kid...!
