The GMAT: Unsolicited advice for those looking to get into a good business school
I used to do quite a bit of recruiting at BYU and BYU-Idaho. One of the things I've observed over the last 10 years of visiting both campuses and interacting with hundreds of students is 70%+ of good business students (GPA 3.5+) at these two schools want to go to a top b-school for an MBA. If you're talking with Finance students from BYU, the number is higher. If you're talking with Supply Chain students at BYU-Idaho, the number is lower. Like it or not the biggest determining factor in where you can go is your GMAT score.

A couple pieces of unsolicited advice on approaching and prepping for the GMAT:

+ do not take more than 12 weeks to study for the test; if you take longer, many times you will begin to forget what you studied
+ if you are lacking motivation to study, pay the money and sign up for the test; most people are cheap and the prospect of wasting a couple hundred bucks is enough to motivate them to buckle down and study
+ before you begin studying get a game plan of how much time you will spend studying i.e. three times a week for two to three hours each session
+ create a structure of how you use your study time; a common cadence I've seen is four weeks to go through a couple practice books cover to cover, four weeks to do timed practice sets, and four weeks to do full-length practice tests
+ good study materials include the latest study guides put out by GMAC (they administer the test and will use old test questions in their materials) and Kaplan (great test-taking tips); I'm sure others on CB will have good recommendations
+ fasting and prayer is worth about 50 points; this can best explain why there are so many LDS students at top business schools
