Ouch! I felt that the fact that Fernand and Edmond were best friends made the
betrayal much worse in the movie than in the book where they were barely acquaintances. Also, The revenge was so dang convoluted and drawn out in the book it didn't have the same impact for me. I feel like the lives were ruined in spectacular fashion in the movie and that it was a lot cleaner than the book. Sure the movie missed some of the convolution and didn't capture the drawn-out nature of the lives ruined, but I didn't like that in the book either.
