Let’s look at one aspect and see if that changes anything.

Let’s say you are on a frictionless skateboard and you are on one end of a flat mile long frictionless surface. The other end of the flat surface is 8 inches lower. At t=0 you let go and allow yourself to roll, accelerating until reach the other end (earth gravity).

Localized that is the same idea as the originional problem, right?
