With ESPN. IF each team is getting a raise and will get $7 million, it is very likely that BYU will get a significant pay raise when they renew their TV contract with ESPN.
Most reports put the current BYU/ESPN contract at somewhere between $5 and $7 million per year already. So, it could mean that BYU will likely get double what they currently get in their current contract.
If BYU can get $12 to $15 million per year in TV money from ESPN, it will still be a lot less than what current P5 teams get, but I will keep BYU closer to the P5.
while I do think there are valid arguments to joining a conference, mainly the idea that a team gets a reset for the conference season, and the pursuit of a conference championship, the monetary and scheduling favors an independent schedule.
I know Holmoe is spoken of as a pejorative by some, but from a scheduling standpoint I think he's done an incredible job. It annoys me that some BYU fans complain now that maybe the schedule is too difficult.
I love this year's schedule. I think it is both very difficult, but very doable. I love that, if by some crazy chance, BYU were to go 11-1 or 12-0 this coming season, at the very least they would be in every conversation concerning the Playoff and the NY6. The press would be invaluable. But the arguments for including bYU in the playoff would be far more valid by virtue of the schedule.
Despite what Bronco once said, Independence is sustainable.
