If you're going to do Hallstatt, stay overnight. It is shoulder to shoulder
between about 9 am and 4 pm - if you can find parking at all. The tour buses have just ruined it. The food is lousy, and the residents fairly surly.
It used to be a charming and wonderful place to visit up until about 12-15 years ago - then it got Rick Steves'd. In the 1990's however, it was one of my favorite places on the planet.
