So it's the question around surgery that could be detrimental, not spring ball
itself. Spring ball for #2 QBs is a big deal, not established starters. You won't find many coaches who will say it otherwise.

I get what you're saying, but again, I'm not trying to say it's nothing at all. Of course it's not ideal. But future health aside, is the lack of participation in spring camp really going to set him back? #1, we won't have any way to compare. #2, there's just not much about the nature of spring ball to suggest it will hurt him more than the rest of the year can help him.... Of course, assuming health.

There's no way to know, but I wouldn't think this surgery thing is going to turn out to be a big deal. The nature of it, what they were trying to do. The corrective nature of it from the many people who have brought it up makes it feel a whole lot different than if he were in a game last year and totally destroyed something that needed work. It wasn't that his arm got totally shot during a play and it has to be repaired. I don't know. I probably sound crazy even to myself, and I'm no doctor, but it's just a little different situation than if he were to have had a major injury during the season that put him out.

I'll just maintain that spring camp is far less important for the starters, including QB. Even though he's a true soph, it's still not as big of a deal. This was always a bigger deal for Jaren Hall. There's a list of things you're really trying to get a feel for in spring ball and QB2 is one of them.

We have established coaches that aren't installing a new system. Coaches have said this year is more about taking what they have and what they know and just getting better at it. Then you add in the typical parts of spring ball. QB2 battles, getting a look at who can fill gaps left by departures, getting a feel for your depth and who can make a name for themselves for competition later on, etc. And a young established starter at QB that has more work to do mentally than physically.
It sets up to be a survivable thing where we shouldn't have to worry about what the possible setback might be. It's hard to believe there will be much of anything ***so long as he heals and is ready to start throwing later in the summer.*** Which he should.

Trying to come up with something we can't measure just doesn't seem worth it. I think there's more he can do to progress than there is something that hurts him like a few weeks of live passing in the winter.
