I only set foot in dealerships to test drive and then to sign papers at the end.

Everything else was via email. I started off by emailing a bunch of dealers, telling them what I wanted and what I would pay. Any dealer who would not get in my ballpark quickly was eliminated as quickly. Then once I was down to 2-3 dealers who would work with me, I negotiated the final price and told them exactly what I would pay when I came in to pick up the car and sign the papers. I made it clear that the price included everything and if they tried to add anything at the last moment/upon my arrival, I was either getting it for free or I would walk. All of the emailing prior to going to the dealer maybe took a total of 3-5 hours over 2 weeks time. Some of it was just waiting to get the exact vehicle I wanted on the lot.

Finally agreed on a price with a dealer, had my own financing, and when I arrived it took about 30-45 minutes to get everything signed and I was on my way. Simple.
