I am a singer, but not a great one. My opinion has changed over the years.

I have sung in many rock bands, choirs, quartets, and solo performances. I know enough to know that I don't have the talent to ever be a great singer.

My 3rd son has always had a passion for singing, and performing. When he got to high school, he tried out for the choir. I was surprised that he made it, because he wasn't very good. I think they were desperate, so everyone made it.

These were his weaknesses:

Major pitch problems. He could somewhat carry a tune, but every note was only generally in the vicinity of what it should have been.

Narrow, limited range. He couldn't sing high enough for tenor, and couldn't sing low enough for bass.

Tone. He had an awkward, unnatural sounding tone.

On the plus side, he had a natural feel for music, and a gift for writing songs. He had also become a very good self-taught pianist.

He has always wanted to make a carreer as a rock singer. As a parent, I didn't want to crush his dreams, but I saw no chance of him ever becoming a great singer. I encouraged him to develop his gift as a song writer and pianist, because he is exceptional at both. But no, he wanted to be a singer, and was hurt that I didn't show more enthusiasm for that talent.

He set out to prove me wrong. He spent many hours every day trying to improve his singing. I'm not kidding. He would be up at 5 AM at the piano, working on vocal exercises. When I got home from work, he was at the piano, working on vocal exercises. It was a horrible sound. I had to leave the room, go somewhere else and turn on some other noise to drown him out. He read everything online about improving his voice. He ordered books on it, and constantly watched youtube videos from vocal coaches. I suppose that he averaged 5 or 6 hours a day working on his voice.

This went on for years.

After a long while, he started improving, first his range, then his tone. Finally, after very many years of intense hard work, his pitch has improved dramatically. Now he can sing about an octave higher than I can, with amazing power.

Last year he made it to American Idol. He went before the big judges, but unfortunately, cracked on one note during his audition. He still got a "Yes" from Katy Perry, but the other two said "No".

He has done a lot of performing locally, in the Salt Lake area. And he did prove me wrong.

He has produced some original songs, and has them all over Spotify, iTunes, Youtube, etc. If you search for Jarom Eubanks, you'll find his stuff.

Here is one of his original songs. It's not his best, but it does show his range and power toward the end.
