I think we're talking past each other - my point is that to call black people "black" is acceptable (and actually
preferred by many). I think your point is more to the OP's family being surprised that there are a bunch of black people in Tx?

I'm reading that the OP thinks there is an issue with using the term "blacks" rather than using the term "African-Americans" or "Afro-Americans" to which my response is that both terms will offend some people with black skin - but most would agree that neither term is particularly offensive. (I'd bet that more and more you'll start seeing "black" become the term used by most) -

And so if shatter2 means that he doesn't think it's racist to call black people "blacks" then I agree with him/her.
