I'm torn on the issue.
I agree with you that 100%, we are behind in development. As long as players are going into professional soccer after college, we will be behind.

That is the leading factor. We rely on other nations' academies to develop our players. We celebrate when a 14 year old signs with a foreign academy. Then we place ridiculously high expectations on him.

That being said, the popularity of soccer in our nation DOES play a role. If it were the #1 sport, more resources would be poured into it, better athletes, cerebral, technical players would choose soccer. If it was #1 there is no way we would be happy with anything less than top 5 all the time.

So academies would be fast tracked and we would not have the Wil Trapps playing the six.
