When I can maintain >4k calories/day my arms and chest definitely get bigger and my maxes get heavier. I gain a little
more fat and don't improve as much as I did in my 20s but I definitely see an improvement in my strength and muscle mass when I'm consuming enough calories.

The trick, for me, is also not to become complacent in how heavy I go with each workout. When I know my calories are on track I have to reassure myself that I can lift heavy and make sure I'm at or close to failure at the end of my sets.
