Not every new coach can walk into a cherry situation like Bronco did with a team loaded with NFL talent and BYU all time greats that had several years of stellar recruiting leading into their first year. Some of the best players to ever don a BYU uniform were recruited during Crowton's crappy years and hit their primes during Bronco's early years. The dude was pretty dang fortunate to take the job when he did. The team was locked and loaded and primed for a breakout season, only problem was Bronco stumbled out of the gate his first year and drastically underperformed but he figured things out by year 2.
