My experience tells me it is common for employers to do this. My legal training tells me that in some states
you are stuck. In others the repayment provisions might be unenforceable. If you plan on leaving the company before the date in the amendment, I'd consult an employment attorney in your state sooner rather than later. If you don't plan on leaving before the date, I'd probably take a wait and see approach.
