I agree with most of what you've said.
I think the sweet spot is a hard funded tenure track position at a middle-tier state university. Your salary is funded for at least 9 months of the year, and the demands for publishing and funding really aren't all that high, at least compared to top-tier schools. I think BYU falls into this category (along with a handful of other larger universities in the Mountain West states).
