Keep in mind that the BCS (and now the playoffs) was created to prevent that

model from ever working again. The outrage sparked from the 1984 BYU NC led directly to the “Bowl Coalition” that started in 1992 and then the “Bowl Alliance” in 1995 and eventually the BCS in 1998.

That model will never again lead to national prominence like we once had.
