My wife and daughter are both artists. My wife's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to get her a quality drawing/painting tablet-ey thing. I don't know much anything about these, other than to consider pressure sensitivity, resolution and size.

I started looking at some on Amazon and learned some you have to look at your computer screen while touching the tablet, but the image doesn't show up on the tablet itself. Others, you have to be hooked up to a computer, but you draw and view the image on the tablet screen. Others, you draw on and view the image on the tablet, and don't have to be hooked up to a computer at all, until you want to upload the image.

I'd want to get one that does not require the user to be connected to a computer to draw — so she can draw out by the lake or in the car (bumps add character, right?).

Do you have one of these tablet-ey, arty things you really like? Or one you would get if you had the choice (and, ideally, a budget of under $300)? Can you get a good one for under $300?
