Besides navy being the original color, I think one of the main reasons for the change was to sell more gear. People weren’t buying royal gear. Go look at video of the 1990 game against #1 Miami. It was the most important game in the stadium and hardly anyone was wearing royal. Maybe appetites have changed, but sales went up when they switched to navy.
