Put another way, an offense needs to gain an average of 3.33 yards per play.
If you do that three times in a row, you get a first down and move the ball down the field. Claude Bassett used to preach this stat to his linebackers. Any time you got a stop on defense and held the offense to 3 yards or less gained, you called it a win on defense.

Esukpa "won" only 33% of his runs on Saturday. The defense won the other 67% of his rushing attempts.
