This sort of happened to me. Studied an old exam from a grad student in my lab
who had taken the same course as me a few semesters earlier. Most of the problems on my test were verbatim from the earlier exam. I double checked the syllabus and there was nothing that forbade using old exams to study. I talked to the professor about it, he thanked me for my honesty, and gave me a nice grade at the end of the semester.
