Is it coaching? Is it a lack of institutional support (recruiting staff, academic support, etc)? Is BYU trying to get the best coaches or are they just cheap? Is it an honor code issue? Does BYU just not have the athletes and if not, can they get them with the current restrictions? How much does independence/non-P5/scheduling issues play a factor?
I think Bronco did very well in a G5 world (where BYU has had their success). He kept things going as the local college football landscaped changed but could see the writing on the wall.
The college football world has changed and there is only so much BYU can do to keep up.
I'm not happy with the current results but I'm not sure how much can be done to change it. Improved coaching would help but I'm not sure who BYU could bring on board with the current limitations or how much it will ultimately help if all the other issues aren't addressed as well.
At this point BYU needs....
- better coaching
- better athletes and depth which may require a look at revising the honor code
- better institutional support (recruiting support, etc)
- a path to national relevance (current schedules aren't it as BYU can't win enough to succeed)
