he couldn’t get anyone to throw him a bone in order to take it to the next level. The prevailing wisdom back then was that any idiot can win 7-9 games a year at BYU because we’re special. IIRC Jason Buck even wrote an editorial about it in the Deseret News. You just have to roll out of bed to get to 8 wins at BYU.

Kalani was warned before he took the BYU job that he would have to fight and claw for every dime he’d be able to pry from the admin. Zach Nyborg (BYU Director of Football Ops under Bronco, then at OSU under Andersen w/Kalani) gave Kalani a list of things that were chronically underfunded at BYU relative to other serious college football programs and spoke openly about it on Criddle’s show after Kalani was hired. Things like nutrition/meals, recruiting staff, analytics support, S&C, facilities, etc. Not to mention the funds available to hire assistants (which was only rectified, and then only partially, after the Detmer fiasco). Remember when Bronco bussed the team to the 2015 Las Vegas Bowl in order to save up money to renovate the weight room?

And rest assured, once we get back to 8-9 win seasons whatever extra resources have been allocated in the meantime will dry up or level off.

BYU has had plenty of chances to show it wants to make a splash with the football team as an Independent and has thus far declined (one of the biggest reasons why we shouldn’t be an Independent). No reason to think getting back to 8 wins will change anyone’s mind.

We are content to play meaningless exhibition games around the country, win 2/3 of them and run a nice, clean little program. There is no apparent drive for anything approaching excellence, especially if it costs money.

This is the root of people’s frustration with the admin. Poor coaching has undoubtedly lost us some games but inept or incoherent administration contributes to the poor coaching.
