There is no possible universe in which Sitake is still the "best choice." Even a competent Utah HS coach could have coached BYU to 4-8 two years ago. Losses to Toledo and USF also suggest that there isn't something to Sitake's coaching that BYU can't get anywhere else. Even if Sitake was the best choice then (and subsequent results suggest that he was not), he's certainly not the best choice now. I just can't believe that a coach who fields teams that lose to MAC and middling AAC schools is as good as it gets.
