If BYU kept these things in house and dealt with them in private without the huge penalty most would never know. The issue is when kids like Bernard or Davies magically get kicked off the team, ect with no explanation.

Maybe the issues is the degree of punishment for a first offense? If you're an 18 or 19 yr old kid that was just told they'll be losing a year of playing because they messed up can be tough. Not saying the reactions are justified just that these are kids making bad choices that get even heavier repercussions because of it.
