Hodad's and Rocky's are solid burger recommendations below. If you're looking for an experience as well as food, Lucha Libre Mexican food is an experience (Mexican luchador decorations). Food is acceptable but not the reason for the visit. I think Tacos El Gordo is the best Mexican option--cheap but satisfying. There are a few locations. TJ Taco is similar but in Escondido. I also like Yesenia's and Cotija's for cheap greasy Mex food. Both have a couple locations in SD. Nothing extraordinary but if I'm doing lunch on my own that's where I head.
For really good sushi, but pricey, Ken Sushi is *fantastic*.
Also consider "Extraordinary Desserts" downtown. Just dessert, but if you're downtown hitting any number of good restaurants in the Gaslamp, skip dessert at the resto and head to Extraordinary Desserts. Also in Escondido: Peterson's Donuts. Cash only. There'll be a line. Get something custard filled.
