Your logic is completely refuted by the existence of Cinderella teams in the
NCAA tourney. On paper they look weaker, and there’s no reason they should beat the blue bloods.

Then they win a game or two, get an upset and off they go. Their confidence builds and they leverage the emotion of winning into more wins.

It’s part of what makes sports so awesome to watch, and CFB is the one sport that is mostly excluded from the phenomenon because the blue bloods, feeding off your logic, have built a system that disqualifies the little guys before they have a chance to settle it on the field.

So no, I would never trade an irrelevant exhibition game against Minnesota for the chance to make it to the playoff, pull off an upset and catch fire, and ride it to a championship game appearance. Not only would an expanded playoff be better for BYU but it would also make CFB so much better by keeping the playoff from what it is now- an exclusive club only available to the blue bloods.
