Awesome post! love this read and thanks for sharing.
If I landed a sub species of the cut I wouldn't be able to tell what it was without looking it up. I haven't even heard of the Gila.

My most memorable and keep in mind I am still fairly novice and just started about 8 years ago and didn't even catch fish for my first two, three years. I only learned dry at first and wow that was some frustrating times.

-My first fish, a 9" tiger trout caught on my best buddies fly rod with a caddis dry and that is what got me in love with the art of fly fishing. After that there was no turning back to a spinning reel fishing ever again. My best buddy died a year after this trip in the uintas and his parents gave me his fly rod.

-10" Brown a few years later on a dry and it was the point that I realized it wasn't just a dumb fish and I wasn't just getting lucky. I was starting to get all of my variables right from presentation, reading the river, setting the hook.

-12" Brook on a small stream pocket's that left completely out of the water for my dry fly. One of the coolest things I have ever seen. It was like I was watching the fish in slow motion fly through the air which was probably a shorter distance then the way it seemed. Setting the hook on this one was one of the coolest things I can remember in fly fishing career.

-14" Rainbow on woolly bugger

-18" Rainbow on a woolly bugger. long fight and it was after breaking my line on four others just as big, but I wasn't use to catching fish this big so I never had to let trout run before.

-16" Brown Trout( first one that wasnt smaller nymphing) Still terrible at nymphing, but getting better.

Not nearly anything to brag about, but it is what makes this art so great. Seems like it can never be mastered, there is always something to learn and some beautiful fish and story to add to the list.
