Freakanomics podcast this week is about tipping.
Everyone tips a waiter. No one tips at McDonalds. Social pressure to tip is a big reason why people tip, but some tippers are tippers everywhere.

The restaurant business can get away with paying less than minimum wage (where this is legal) if tips make up the difference. No other industry has this practice that I'm aware of. This is why I always tip my waiter and rarely (if ever) tip any one else.
