Having a lame duck coach just gives the more ammunition to use against BYU. "Who's going to be your coach next year of you go there? Don't count on it being the guy you're talking to right now if the school isn't ready to commit to them..."

The same thing was happening during LaVell's last few years. Him being close to retirement was being used a negative recruiting tool by other coaches against BYU. And it hurt BYU.

I'm not pleased with things. I wish they were better. But a lame duck coaching situation is the worst of all choices. "Let next year play out and see" is the stupidest approach of all.

Either extend or fire. I really don't care. Don't "wait and see" because that does more long-term damage than anything else.

Move on at the end of the season and go from there or extend. Plus, an extension hurts nothing if the buyout is right. Negotiate it there and it doesn't matter how many years it is.
