I would go even if you didn’t know the wife. You know him and I’m sure it would
mean a lot. I had a co worker who’s daughter passed away. I had never met her but a lot of us made the drive it was about 5 hours just to support him and his wife. He’s mentioned multiple times since then how much it meant that so many people showed up to support him.
