This comes from my wife's family, and I've readily jumped on board. The tradition takes place on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. Every family member has to make at least one pie, and even visitors are invited to make one. This teaches everybody a really good skill, and encourages them to investigate new kinds of pies. Plus, we end up with a ton of delicious pie.
Because we have so much pie, it's actually difficult to finish most of it. So, I added something to the tradition. Wednesday, we make the pie, Thursday we eat turkey, etc. and SOME of the pie with family. Then Friday evening we invite friends over to visit and eat more pie with us. We call this "Friday after Pie Day." My teenagers will invite some of their friends, maybe some ward members will come over, or maybe family that was elsewhere on the day before--I've even had a CBer or two over. It's pretty relaxed, and there's delicious pie. What's not to like?
