I just finished a re-watch of the original Star Wars trilogy. Here are some thoughts:
1. I’m not sure I can pick a favorite of the three. I know Empire is widely regarded as the best, but I can’t stand the Luke stuff on Dagobah, and the Cloud City stuff doesn’t do it for me either.

2. Along the lines of point 1, I have a long standing opinion that Luke Skywalker is overrated, and not a great character. Like stated above, he is a weakness for me in Empire. So whiny, so moody. I have no problems with him in Return of the Jedi, so that might be my most enjoyable of the 3 films.

3. Return of the Jedi is probably the movie that Lucas butchered the most in doing his Special Edition. The CGI around the Sarlaac Pit is atrocious. It was way more menacing when it was just a hole in the ground with spikes and tentacles.
The musical number in Jabba’s place is a joke of course.
The Galaxy wide celebration feels out of place at the end, especially when he’s just showing planets from the prequels.

The one thing I really like, which is also controversial, is the inclusion of Hayden Christensen as the force ghost. We have no connection to old guy playing Anakin. But even though you probably hate him, young Anakin is recognizable and familiar. And I like to think that he is the form Luke saw when he would sense the goodness still in his father. (Also that doesn’t mean you need Ewan McGregor’s force ghost)

Anyway, it’s probably pretty obvious based off of what we think we know about Episode 9, but I feel like Return of the Jedi will heavily influence it. Much like how Age of Ultron ended up foreshadowing and mirroring Endgame in so many ways.

Next up is a re-watch of the prequels. Yippee
