Coaches can put kids on medical retirement, the scout team... or permanently bench a kid, but they can't take away their scholarship if they are in 'good standing' (stay academically eligible & stay out of trouble).

All power 5 conferences adopted this rule back in 2014. They have tweaked it a bit since then... but it's a still 4-year guarantee.
