What's weird is that it's become a big deal just to show up to work.
I have a son who is 24 and another who is 21. Between the two of them, they've had several job interviews and jobs. A frequent topic in job interviews is the importance of showing up to work and it's common for employers to give a bonus just for showing up for a certain number of consecutive days.
They've had jobs in plumbing and electrical fields and that sort of thing.

My boss (well, he's 3 levels above me) hired his son-in-law to be a desktop support guy about 5 years ago. He was in his 20s and a good kid, from what I could tell but his work ethic was a terrible fit. He struggled with delivering on projects and routine tasks because he refused to spend enough time at work. He just wouldn't do it. Finally, my boss had to fire him. Yeah, he fired his own son-in-law. It was stunned when it happened, but it was probably the right thing to do as far as the company was concerned.
It's too hard to find younger guys who will work.
