Here are the studies actually referenced in the third paragraph:
Let me give my interpretation of the article I referenced: Even the guy who argues patents help big firms share knowledge admits the data are clear that the profit incentive for patents has been refuted by various studies over a long period of time (ie monopoly granting patents do not lead to more or better inventions). The author does not present the argument nor the data against the dissemination of knowledge argument. So rather that the quantitative utilitarian argument, the author resorts to some qualitative mumbo jumbo to defend the patent system. Same as the article you referenced.
