I retired about 6 years ago with about a million and I feel like I have more
than we need. Our expenses aren't all that high. Social security actually covers almost all our necessary expenses; we have about 300k of our retirement funds in an annuity that pays 6% for as long as either of us is alive, which covers most of the "extras"; and the rest of the million is just gravy. We'll have been to the Caribbean three times in less than a year in April, we've taken all 13 family members on two week vacations each of the last two years, and our retirement balance still been increasing every year. Of course, the stock market has been exceptional these past years, so it won't always be this easy, but just the Social Secuirty and annuity would cover everything we'd need and want for a while at least.

I was very worried before I retired, but looking back i shouldn't have been.

I will admit that we live fairly simply other than the vacations and travel, but I buy what I want whenever I really want to, like a big new tv or a new laptop. But I buy a new car only every 5 to 10 years or so and we have no debt to speak of. My wife is frugal while I'm the spender.

My advice would be to keep saving, but worry less. For us, it's been far easier than i thought it would be. YMMV.

Best wishes with your finances.
