McCarthy's teams at Weber State and NMSU were always among the top teams in the nation at FT shooting. McCarthy actually wrote his master's thesis on free throw shooting. My coach could make 50 free throws in a row any time he wanted. He said it was mostly mental (assuming you have good shooting mechanics), which was correct, but he also made us shoot them when our legs were tired so we could get used to that. McCarthy's teams always shot their free throws when their legs were tired after running ladders.
