I'm all for apples to apples comparison, which is why it makes no sense to

divide Covid-19 deaths by a full year when deaths have only occured within the last month or two.  For a comparison you couldn't come out on September 11th, 2001 and say deaths due to terrorists are the #1 cause of death in the US!  True for 1 day, but not true for the year obviously.  But to mimimize it and say "Why are people getting upset? — only a few thousand people died in all of 2001 due to terrorists!  More die of car accidents, the flu, etc. etc. every year" also paints an grossly inaccurate picture.

The problem with any "averaging" of deaths due to corona virus is there is no true average so far.  Meaning we don't know what will come each day/week.  May be more, may be less that we think.  We just simply need more information in order to say how bad it is.  Also on a side note, I would love it if we could stop comparing Covid-19 deaths to flu deaths, car accidents, etc. because #1 we have years of good data on those averages and #2 the deaths from Covid-19 will come with a huge asterisks from shutting down society for weeks/months.  We're not shutting down society because of current deaths, we're shutting it down based on how bad it could be if we didn't.
