A few people had single rooms, some had a roommate who didn't show up, and several more had no roommate after fall semester because people moved out. But definitely the exception and your sense is right, it's possible but a long shot.

If he can get a single room in Helaman that may strike the right balance of social opportunity with private space to retreat to. Would have been perfect for my kid too but having a roommate he didn't really get along with was possibly the most valuable part of his freshman experience.
