Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn question for the trekkies
I've been on a little Star Trek kick and have watched a few of the original episodes. I recently watched "Space Seed" - the original episode with Kahn. It made me want to rewatch Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.

In the end, when the Genesis device detonates and a new planet is created, where did those materials come from? Was it a nearby planet? Or was it because they were in the nebula and it organized the materials there into a planet? Because of the simulation presentation by Dr Marcus, I always thought it had to have been a nearby planet or the moon their research station was orbiting. But now I'm thinking it was because it detonated in the nebula.
