will penetrate standard masks with ease.  My understanding is that the masks keep you from infecting others as much by dampening coughs and sneezes etc which can project lots of spores out.  They also help if you try to touch your face etc but in my opinion, whenever I have worn a mask I am always adjusting it and touching my face more often.
