I recently did a similar long distance move. Two things that were very helpful:
1. Use google maps ‘historical’ feature see what commutes from the various suburbs look like at different departure times. I found it very accurate and helpful for the DC area. Some areas that might look close can be double the transit time at 7am.

2. Use GreatSchools.org and look at the public elementary school boundaries for the 9/10 and 10/10 schools...these neighborhoods will likely be very nice, safe, etc. Look at the map and see how close you can get before the elementary schools start going down in number.
