I guess maybe I got into your conversation mid-drift
I don't share the OP's concern much — bc Pope seems to be carefully screening the recruits (he said as much). It's true that in the past our FB team has been lackadaisical in screening players (& in truth the failure can be w both LDS & non-LDS recruits; BYU isn't for everyone).

The problem as I see it is mainly an issue because it potentially leads not only to a blackeye for BYU when a kid does something real bad — but the more common problem is when a kid possibly receives a public shaming by the media for an indiscretion that at most colleges would amount to no crime at all. I imagine that was the OP's main concern as well — & not necessarily an ideal of "keeping things Mormon pure" at our good ol' BYU. I'd like to give him tht benefit of the doubt, anyways.

But I do disagree with him that Pope's strategy will likely lead to major issues down the road. I really think Pope's doing his due diligence at screening kids. Getting kids who are not only good natural fits lifestyle-wise & school-wise — but kids who are also willing to live the HC w/out too much reservation. Really, there's more non-LDS kids who are willing to make that kind of sacrifice than many LDSs realize. But there's of course many, many other potential recruits who probably shouldn't even entertain making that commitment. And it's important that Pope feels the situation out carefully with each recruit he considers & interviews.

Like I said - I believe coach Pope is doing just that.
