I’m curious as to how this is necessary in 2020. I believe you must have a good reason. I just can’t imagine what that

New renter says it’s a requirement for work from home

Does he have separate internet that he pays for?
Broda

No they use ours

Then just go with powerline extenders. No need to run new cables.

Isn’t that WiFi based though?
CaliWG

No. It runs through the cables and wiring. May work very well or not.

Just Google powerline extenders and do a little reading. It would be worth $50

Weird. I guess they want to plug their own WiFi router into it?
Slim

Or plug the computer in directly. It can be a lot faster that way.

This. The employer requires computers be plugged in directly.

idk man. A high end WiFi router will have faster transmission than what most people’s internet’s company are delivering

My 5G band WiFi network tops at 250Mbps. Hard line gets 900.

Some have higher capabilities than what the IP provides.

Network speeds are different than internet speeds. If I have a faster router

I think he's just pointing out that with a good router, the router is not what
Broda

What I mean to say is that with a good router, the router is not what limits the internet speed. Not that it increases

Probably needs to plug in an Aruba router so he can get into work network

If you HAD to have the internet modem and router in the basement? I dunno...
Broda

I took the easy way out and got powerline extenders for the basement.

Those do work fairly well.

I’ve used them in 3 different residences - one was great, on par with Ethernet. One was so, so - on par with WiFi.

Why do you need it in your basement? Could you use powerline adapters that use

Cat5/cat6 cable is very easy to run if you are so inclined. After that it’s just a matter of terminating it,
cheezedawg
5/26/20 9:17pm
Btw, by “easy to run”, I mean that the cable is thin and flexible, and since it’s low voltage, you don’t have the same

If the wiring is already there, it’s a DIY project

Just buy some a Google Mesh devices. Put one in the basement and run your Ethernet from that device. No need to run

Completely agree. This would likely be sufficient for renter’s work hard-wire

I would call BS on that. Here's what you do: Ask for his requirements. Not that it be hardwired ethernet. What is his

Look in to Moca 2.0 or 2.5 adapters

It’s super easy. One of the simplest wiring jobs there is.

Not if he has to do a bunch of fishing and routing the wires through who knows
Broda
5/26/20 9:55pm
That’s a valid point. Fishing wires isn’t fun.

Depends in the house if its split level with no attic, that's tough

Not what you want to hear, but have him get his own ISP. Not worth the liability

Read this if you don't want to fish wires through the walls or use powerline
