Some tax credits are refundable and some are not
Refundable tax credits will net you a refund check regardless of tax liability. Meaning, you can get a refund past what you’ve paid. Negative effective taxes.
Non-refundable tax credits will be paid secondary to refundable, the unused portion will carry forward to the next year.
